Credit score: Guiomar Solanas and Francisca Peixoto, IRB Barcelona It's extensively believed that, with the passage of time, stem cells stop to distinguish between day and evening cycles, in different phrases they lose their circadian rhythm, and that this loss promotes ageing. Nevertheless, this has been discovered to not be the case. Two research by scientists on the Institute for Analysis in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona), the Pompeu Fabra College (UPF), (each in Spain), and the College of California, Irvine (US) printed on 10 August within the journal  Cell  reject this speculation. Throughout ageing, stem cells proceed to indicate rhythmic exercise however reprogram their circadian capabilities. "Aged stem cells preserve circadian rhythm however now carry out...

Almonds may help boost cholesterol clean-up crew

In a study, researchers compared the levels and function of high-density lipoprotein (HDL cholesterol) in people who ate almonds every day, to the HDL levels and function of the same group of people when they ate a muffin instead. The researchers found that while participants were on the almond diet, their HDL levels and functionality improved. Penny Kris-Etherton, distinguished professor of nutrition at Penn State, said the study, published in the  Journal of Nutrition , builds on previous research on the effects of almonds on cholesterol-lowering diets. "There's a lot of research out there that shows a diet that includes almonds lowers low-density lipoprotein, or LDL cholesterol, which is a major risk factor for heart disease," Kris-Etherton said. "But not as much was known about how almonds affect HDL cholesterol, which is considered good cholesterol and helps lower your risk of heart disease." The researchers wanted to see if almonds could not jus...

'Fat but fit' are at increased risk of heart disease

Researchers have found that being overweight or obese increases a person's risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) by up to 28 per cent compared to those with a healthy bodyweight, even if they have healthy blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels. The findings add to a growing body of evidence that suggests being 'fat but fit' is a myth, and that people should aim to maintain a body weight within a healthy range. Storing too much fat in the body is associated with a number of metabolic changes, including increased blood pressure, high blood sugar and altered cholesterol levels, which can lead to disease and poor health. However, previous studies have revealed a subset of overweight people who appear to lack the adverse health effects of excess weight, leading to them being classified as 'metabolically healthy obese' in the medical literature, and 'fat but fit' in the media. Now, a group led by researchers at Imperial College London and t...
